Learn Overseas offers education and community service placements in the villages and small towns on the outskirts of India’s capital Delhi. It is an opportunity to volunteer on a charitable project working with children and learning about the indigenous culture too. You can choose from the following options and spend from 2 to 16 weeks working with various age groups:

Care within orphanages or with children on social care programmes in and around Delhi and in the rural areas of Haryana, Jaipur and Bikaner. As a carer you will get first hand experience of managing children who may be traumatised due to a loss or feel isolated and alone. For longer project of one month or more you can take a placement in the day to day running of a crèche/ pre-school assisting some of the poorest children, teaching them general hygiene and looking after them. Ideally some experience of ‘caring’ is required, but more important are resilience and a positive attitude. You will gain from succeeding in a challenging and unfamiliar situation – one in which you may feel a mixture of emotions including caring, threatened, questioning and giving.

Experience working closely with autistic children observing and participating in activities including clinical services, parent /teacher training, counselling and helping children with autism to express themselves, is available. The school in Delhi is one of the very few institutions available in India to teach students with autism.

Take up a teaching project in any one of the cities of Delhi, Punjab and Uttar Pradesh. These postings will include work in primary and secondary schools. Volunteers are needed to teach English and help improve conversational skills of the students - you will need to be enthusiastic and competent in any extra-curricular activity. Helping children learn life-skills, sport, art, music and drama are always popular. Using your initiative and being pro-active are important qualities on any work experience programme - build positive relationships with children enabling them, making them feel confident and motivated to explore.
